PETA claims Bible "discriminatory towards animals"

While the Bible may be one of the bestselling books of all time, it has its fair share of critics, from followers of other religions, to atheists stunned by the sheer brutality of the Old Testament, to those with little interest in endless lists of who begat who.

Now a fresh group is getting in on the Bible bashing, with the animal rights organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals suggesting that Christianity’s holy text is “speciesist”.

  2. It’s everything BUT a moral guide. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is better moral guide. No one seems to realize the fault that this is supposed to be the devine word, a book written by GOD himself and yet people can’t even stomache the ignorance it spews that they claim to be 100% fact without need of valid proof. I hope I live to see the day the majority of people put away superstitious beliefs to the point where they are the minority.
Oh and sorry PETA we are the superior species all those cows, chickens, and monkeys deserve to be eaten they don’t have the collective brain capacity to have dreams (real dreams), and fly to the moon get over it.

First of all way to be open and accepting there CraftyAndy. Secondly, last i checked the bible is one of the least politically correct books in the world. No one changed it then, why would someone change it now. The bible is revised to make it easier to understand, not glorify certain parties, or make other people happy. Knowing an animals gender is irrelevant towards the purpose of the book. Don’t like it then don’t read it.

My first reaction to the head line. *Image of me outside screaming in frustration*

Now to get to the New Humanist(shudder) page and see what they say…

Trek, CraftyAndy was just coping what the original text said, though I might have make sure to put that at the beginning.

The real problem is that animals are called ‘it’ as apposed to ‘he’ and ‘she’. Here’s my two cents; In the Christian faith, animals were made male and female from the get go. But they weren’t called that. The different genders had different names. Fawn and bucks. Foxes and Vixens, Dogs and Bitches. Only humans at the time used words that meant Male/Female and Man/Woman. I don’t know a language historian so I can’t say for sure when they developed.

Also, cheers to Paul Sam, the original writer, for this ending:

“So it would appear PETA are fighting a losing battle over Biblical speciesism, unless they take it upon themselves to put out a translation of their own. But in the meantime, they might do well to take a second look at the Bible – when a book features a talking snake in the very first section, it seems a little odd to complain about the lack of anthropomorphism.”

but in conclusion, PETA needs to get off their high horse, leave the Bible alone and be glad that it says in the text to take care of the planet and the animals within for they are gifts from the Lord.

Actually I think that would enforce the term ‘speciesist’ because by that story’s interpretation snakes are the devil and a symbol of evil, and in Christian societies snakes tend to be labeled as “godless creatures”.

But I don’t think that’s really what PETA is complaining over, it’s complaining over the fact that it puts humans higher then the rest of the creatures on the planet. However, I think that all species equally put themselves on a higher pillar then other species as a form of survival, so to have a human book about life meaning being biased toward the human story and human survival should be expected. For if wolves, snakes, or any other species of animal could write their holy book would surely have themselves as God’s “chosen species”.

Heck we have used our religions to segregate on races as whose God’s favorite is, why would it be any different on species? Humankind, we’re all just one big dysfunctional family trying to prove who’s “Daddy’s favorite kid”.

  6. I know right, Jesus was a lamb, and yet God made us after his own image, so why don’t we have wool? Baaah damn it.

  7. As an atheist who believes a few animal rights activists have lost a few marbles, this I find rather amusing.

    Since this gets into a touchy subject I’m only going to say this;

You think peta would liek us and we like peta but actually we’re mortal enemies.

Watch the TV show “Penn & Teller’s: BULLSHIT!” and the episode on PETA. Along with being hilarious they reveal em for what they really are.

I laugh at PETA. And I feel sorry to anyone who reads this and is still supporting them.

AGAIN, My statement here has nothing to do with religion I want to make that 100% clear.
