FA User "Kavi" Allegedly Uses Japan Disaster to Scam Furry Community

Editorial: Be careful with donations:

We are aware that this story is now over a week old. We were tipped about this story by SportyPup. After the outpouring of support he received from the community, he was trying to pay it forward and was working to get donations for “Kavi”. He was very disheartened to learn that this was an apparent hoax and that she was allegedly trying to use the disaster in Japan for personal gain.

Facts we currently have:
Arrianna Johnson also known as Kavi and Spankbank on FurAffinity has had her accounts suspended under suspicion of fraud. In her FA Journal, dated March 12, 2011, she stated that her home in japan had burned down from a gas tank explosion related to the tsunami. The following day, March 13, 2011, she states in her journal that her sister had died.

Shokujoi showed compassion and started a fund drive: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2167593/

There are claims that Kavi’s information is in fact false.

Several FA users have posted information on how to recover money if you donated to this person. These journal entries are here:

Wuffamute: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2176644/
Shokuji: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2176531/

An open letter to Kavi was posted here:

Right now, there are massive holes in the story. We have contacted Paypal for verification that fraud was reported and that they are treating it as such. We are still waiting for a response. We have also contacted several people who were involved in verifying the information in question. They have refused further information or involvement, or have referred us to other FA users. At present, all information presented here is available in public FA journal posts.

What we can say at this time is, BE CAREFUL. There are lots of people who prey on the generosity of others. Furry News Network is happy to help anyone who has a real problem, health emergency or other catastrophe. We do verify information. If you contact us, asking for help, please don’t be offended if we request documentation such as medical records, death certificates, photographic or video proof.

If you really want to help the people of Japan, simply use your cell phone or smart phone and text REDCROSS to 90999. Your $10 gift to the American Red Cross will support their disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific. On occasions when donations exceed American Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters. Charges will appear on your wireless bill, or be deducted from your prepaid balance.

  1. Honestly, I’m disappointed more than anything else. It really takes a sick individual to take advantage of a disaster like that.

  3. I’ll also note here that in Canada, the number to text REDCROSS to is 30333 (and is for a $5 donation).

this is why you never give money to an individual when you want to help during a disaster. In fact, don’t give money to an individual for any reason unless you know and trust them. Ether people are trying to cheat you or they are using you to keep out of working themselves.

Do your research before you give your money away.

  7. I’m amazed people who didn’t know this person were willing to help. It seems quite apparent to me that it’s better to donate to official organisations who can be trusted to than do things on your behalf rather than having to take go out on a limb.

If a person really had lost their home, it’s up to the aid organisations and government to assist, not for individuals making personal donations directly to a stranger.

What is this bullshit lying? I specifically stated that it was not me that had done the damage. But it has already been established, and I can’t believe you still continue to believe this story.

Besides, I’ve already refunded everyone (until I’m verified AGAIN, but that shouldn’t be a problem. /: )
